The Fourth Quarter Has Arrived, Darlin’ —

How Are Those Books?

A Little Fourth-Quarter Reminder

Well, my friends, here we are again.

October has arrived, which means the fourth quarter is officially upon us. Three little months remain in the year, and if you are anything like most of the business owners I know around these parts, you are looking at your calendar wondering how in the world we got here so quickly. Time is flying by so fast these days.

I have to admit, I do rather enjoy this time of year.

The weather cools down, the leaves begin to turn, football is on the television, and somewhere between the first pumpkin-spice offering and the last football tailgate, somebody invariably says:

“I really need to get my books caught up.”

And, dear friend, if that somebody happens to be you, consider this your gentle reminder.

Don’t wait until December.

Your bookkeeping is not simply a record of what happened in your business. Your books tell you where your business stands today. They can help you see what is working, what is costing you money, what you are owed, what you owe others, and what may need your attention before the year comes to a close.

And for those of you who have been meaning to catch up since…well, let’s just say before it got hot outside — there is still time.

I know how it happens.

You have customers to take care of. Jobs to finish. Employees to manage. Equipment to maintain. Crops to tend. Families to feed. And if you’re running a family business, chances are you have a dozen people depending on you before you ever sit down at your desk.

The bookkeeping gets pushed aside.

Then pushed aside again.

Suddenly Christmas is around the corner, and you’re staring at a pile of receipts wondering why you ever thought keeping up with them yourself was a good idea.

Now, I wouldn’t dream of naming names.

Mostly because I know all of you.

But I do know a good bookkeeper when I see one.

If your books are behind, if your accounts need cleaning up, or if you simply want someone else to take this particular chore off your plate, I have a local recommendation worth putting in your address book:

Southern Grace Ledgers LLC.

I have known her for years. She works with small businesses and understands that bookkeeping is about more than numbers on a screen. It’s about giving a business owner the clarity and confidence to know what is happening in the business they’ve worked so hard to build.

And if you happen to be a farmer, contractor, or family-business owner who would rather spend your time doing what you actually do best than sorting through receipts at nine o’clock on a Tuesday night…

Well…

Let’s just say I know somebody.

So, before the fourth quarter gets away from us, take a look at those books.

If they’re current, wonderful.

If they’re not, don’t panic.

Just don’t wait until December to decide that tomorrow is finally the day you’re going to do something about it.

After all, three months may sound like plenty of time.

But around here, we all know how quickly Christmas has a way of sneaking up on us.

Until next time,

Miss Kathryn “Kitty” Caldwell
